There's lots to do and see in the greater San
Fidel area! Here are just a few of the attractions:
 |
Acoma (pronounced AK-oma) pueblo is one of the great
sites in the United States; a 1000 year old village atop
a 300 foot tall mesa. This historic photo
shows the view from the village. The Acoma people have
built a wonderful community and visitor center at the base
of the mesa and tours of the pueblo are available year
round. The Acoma people also operate a casino and
hotel just two miles from San Fidel. You can visit
their website at:
www.skycitycasino.com.

El Malpais means the badlands but this
volcanic area holds many surprises. Lava flows, cinder
cones, pressure ridges and complex lava tubes dominate the
landscape. A closer look reveals high desert environments
where animals and plants thrive. Prehistoric ruins, ancient
cairns, rock structures, and homesteads remind us of past
times. Bordering on El Malpais, you'll find Ventana Natural
Arch. There are many places to hike and some extreme
trails. |
 |
Bandera Crater and Ice Caves, a privately
owned attraction, is very much worth the trip. You
hike about a half mile up to the center of a cinder cone
volcano. There are some really great views. The
Ice Caves are also well worth a visit. They are really
a collapsed lava tube where it's cold enough for there to be
ice year round. You'll find their website at:
www.icecaves.com.

El Morro National Monument is a reliable
waterhole hidden at the base of a massive sandstone bluff.
That made it a popular campsite from ancient times until the
early 20th century. Ancestral Puebloans settled on the
mesa top over 700 years ago. Spanish and American
travelers rested, drank from the pool and carved their
signatures, dates and messages for hundreds of years. There
are Today, over 2,000 inscriptions and petroglyphs, as well
as Ancestral Puebloan ruins. El Morro is about 75 minutes
from San Fidel. |
 |
The area around Grants was a key source of
uranium in the early and mid 20th century. The New
Mexico Mining Museum in Grants tells the story of uranium
mining and includes a tour of a reconstructed mine. |
 |
Since 2000, Antonio and Lucinda Trujillo
have operated Guadalupe Vineyards and Farms in San Fidel.
They produce Riesling, Muscat and Gewurztraminer wines.
Their wines are available at restaurants or, by appointment,
at the vineyard itself. You can call them at
505-552-0082. |

Also in San Fidel, Candy Otero is a vintage
car parts dealer. If you're interested in vintage
cars, come by the gallery and I will introduce you to him.
